Amazingly Simple Star Quilts

I've had this book for a while, but I've never made anything from it. Amazingly Simple Star Quilts by Jeanne Stauffer and Sandra L Hatch.

One of my goals is to make at least one quilt from every book I own. After all, I bought the book because at least one quilt appealed to me, right?? I have a couple of quilts in this book that I really like....

This week, I started playing with my fabric and moving things around and found some plaids that I've had FOREVER. I remembered that there was a quilt in one of my books that I loved and pulled out the book Amazingly Simple Star Quilts. I found the quilt I was thinking about. It's called Homespun Stars.

This is a simple quilt. But star blocks, especially the Sawtooth Star, have always been a favorite. I'm making this one using Homespun plaids, one printed plaid, some brushed cottons and stripes. Thus far, I am making it following the pattern, as far as size. But the closer I get to finishing all the blocks, I'm wondering if I need to make this quilt a bit bigger?? I have enough fabric. I just can't imagine needing a quilt that is 59 inches square. I won't be hanging this one...I'd like to be able to use it someday. Maybe I should make it at least big enough to cuddle under.

What do you think, should I make it larger??

Edited to add a picture of the quilt in the book.

Edited again to add my sister in law's idea to make the quilt larger.

Happy Quilting!!!!!!

If you need encouragement (giggle) then, yes, make it larger. THis would be lovely with the various sizes and haphazard placements. Especially with a nice assortment of fabs.

Lately I haven't been adding borders to my quilts, but I think maybe this quilt needs one. It would still be square, just larger. Just my 2cents worth. Love the stars and the fabric.

It has to be larger unless the baby is the only one gonna cuddle under it. It has to be big enough for you and the baby!
If you don't have enough fabrics to make it larger just holler, I can mail you some! :)

I think this is going to be a lovely quilt. I think you would get more enjoyment out of it if you make it larger. I prefer rectangle shaped quilts rather than square. Keep having fun.

Your blocks are beautiful - I vote for a bigger quilt to snuggle under. :)

You know I do not have experience quilting but lots of growing-up years under quilts, and if your quilt is to be used, then I would add another whole row of the little 4 square blocks to the top and bottom of the center 4 stars to make it rectangular. Somehow a square quilt does'nt pull up to your chin and cover your toes at the same time and if you turn it point to point then it is not wide enough at the bottom.....just my thoughts... a beautiful gouping of stars though and the plaids will be such fun!!!Rhonda

I love your idea of making at least one quilt from each book that you own! I should do the same, but not sure I have that kind of life expectancy! LOL

I say make the quilt a little bigger...I love your sister-in-law's version of the quilt!

Love the stars and especially the plaids...gives the quilt such a homey look. I vote for a rectangular quilt large enough to snuggle beneath.

Hmmm---I know I have that book. I was trying to make the paper pieced stars. The ones I threw away. I know there are lots of plaids and homespuns I put away--would be a good way to use them. Thanks for the idea!
